I remember vagely visiting the famous Venice Beach when I was a kid traveling with my family. The spot is familiar for us foreigners from many popular TV shows, movies and tourist guides. The images of colorful, eccentric Angelenos promenading or rollerblading on the beach, men pumping up at Muscle Beach and surfers riding the waves make this a top destination for many.
When I returned here this summer after many years, I remembered why my memories were so muted. This clearly was not and still isn’t one of my favorite places in town. It was simply too much of everything. Too many tourists, too many hustlers, too many souvenir shops selling things no one really needs.
If you are looking to spend a day at the beach, there are much better choices available. But if you have plenty of time and want to see what all the talk is about, why not check it out! The most interesting parts in the area for me were by the graffiti covered trees and the busy skateboard rink. Rent a bike and you’ll be able to make a quick exit if you start to feel like me!
